By all indications, the Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson fight at UFC 106 should be the exact opposite of what the welterweight division has been for the past year: exciting. While Georges St. Pierre’s domination and the lack of welterweight contenders has gotten a bit old, Koscheck and Johnson both have displayed the kind of potential fans have been waiting to see lately, and watching them go at each other in the cage should provide the kind of fireworks the division has been lacking for so long. Both men boast incredible explosiveness and knockout power, and both are hungry for a title shot sometime in 2010, which should make for one of the best fights of the evening at UFC 106 and one that could conceivably end at any given moment. Johnson, the less experienced of the two with an 8-2 record coming in, is a slight favorite going in at -120 to -110 for Koscheck, who boasts a 13-4 record and is a bit more well-known due to his stint on The Ultimate Fighter. Both have a head-scratching loss on their resume as Koscheck lost to Paul Thiago in his second-to-last fight while Johnson lost to Rich Clementi, but both have had highlight-reel knockouts recently as well. Bet on Josh Koscheck -110 vs Anthony Johnson But the Thiago loss is still up for debate as to how bad it was as Thiago is still somewhat of an unknown quantity. Koscheck brings outstanding wrestling to the fight, as he is like a St. Pierre in terms of his takedown ability. He’s got quick, explosive hips and his takedowns are sometimes strong enough to spear his opponents directly into the cage. Lately, however, Koscheck has tried to refine his striking game. Instead of just tossing his big right hand out there every single time out, he has begun to work in more combos and head movement. But if Koscheck tries to strike face-to-face against Johnson, one of the most powerful guys in the UFC pound-for-pound, he might find himself in hot water. Johnson is probably a better boxer at this point in time and he also has a head kick KO to his credit over Kevin Burns, which helped him avenge an earlier loss due to a bad break with an eye poke from Burns. Koscheck has a slight edge in the wrestling department and also on the ground, and if he fights a smart fight and picks his spots on the feet, he should be able to win this one. The problem is that Koscheck will be expected to put on a show and go for the knockout. But Koscheck is smart enough to not let the crowd affect him, and he will be business-like this time around, using his wrestling to control the action to get the win.
